Women entrepreneurs affected by covid-19


With COVID-19 wreaking havoc on the economy, a recent poll from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce showed that 24% of small businesses are less than two months away from shuttering permanently, and 11% are less than one month away. And according to American Express, many women-owned businesses work within industries most vulnerable to COVID-19 devastation. Roughly 22% of all women-owned businesses are hair salons, nail salons, and pet groomers, and women also own 16% of the hospitality and food service sector (Hispanic Network Magazine, 2020).

Hispanic women and young adults with less education were hit hard during Covit-19


According to Pew research Center, the downturn has affected some Americans more than others, particularly Hispanic women, immigrants, young adults and those with less education.


Hispanic women have experienced a steeper decline in employment (‑21%) in the COVID-19 downturn than other women or men (Kochhar, 2020).

Updated June 26, 2020 Dr. Eva Galvez works as a family physician for a network of clinics in northwestern Oregon, where low-income patients have been streaming in for nasal swabs over the past several weeks to test for the coronavirus. Dr. Galvez was dumbfounded by the results. Latinos, about half of those screened, were 20 times as likely as other patients to have the virus.

Policies need to change during COVID-19



Without paid sick leave, too many Latinos are forced to choose between financial security and health. After all, just a few days of lost pay due to illness is the same as losing an entire month’s worth of groceries for some families, which fare worse during a pandemic like COVID-19 (Salud America, 2020).
